555 TNT Road Ride | This Bentonville group ride meets @ 5:55 from the Bentonville Square. 35-45 mile ride, spirited pace with several regroups. This is a “try and drop you” race practice kind of ride. No whining! ROUTE: TBD.
XC World Championships Elite Women
An emotional Pauline Ferrand-Prévot (FRA) is back in rainbow stripes. After a long road back from injury and surgery she would overcome a slow start and methodically reel in the front. When she got there she went for it and kept pouring it on until the very end. Kudos Pauline! Notable: Former World Champ Kate Courtney (USA) started out well but faded. She still got a top 5 placing.
XC World Championships Elite Men
With the absence of Mathieu van der Poel (NED) Nino Schurter’s (SUI) path to rainbows was pretty clear. And Schurter did just that. Schurter just attacked and attacked until he broke everyone off his wheel. Nino’s compatriot Mathias Flückiger (SUI) looked like the only one who could battle Schurter. But on the 5th lap he would flat. The race within the race was watching Flückiger return to the front taking 2nd place.
Vuelta a Espana Stage 9
What an amazing stage filled with so much drama. Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) went for a long range attack surely fearing the time losses he would suffer on Stage 10’s ITT. The Astana squad had riders up the road in the break and one by one they would drop back and pace Lopez for as long as they could. The tactic looked good and seemed to be working. Meanwhile in the favorites group Nairo Quintana (Movistar) and teammate Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) one-twoed Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma). Roglic was impressive and reeled in the attacks almost all by himself. Jumbo-Visma also had riders in the break and started dropping them back to help Roglic. On the final climb they would catch Lopez and unfortunately on the gravel sector there was a crash for Roglic and Lopez. Valverde and Quintana would try and take advantage with Quintana going clear with the youngest rider in the race 20 year old Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates). Movistar had one more card to play. Dropping back the race leader and teammate Marc Soler (Movistar) to help Quintana. Soler was visibly disappointed. Then Pogacar attacked winning the stage. Crazy! Meanwhile Roglic did not panic almost methodically reeled in Valverde and closed the gap on Quintana. He even dropped Valverde at the finish to take the 4 second time bonus. Such a strong performance by the former sky jumper.
Vuelta a Espana Stage 10
Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) did what we all knew he could do. He crushed the ITT. Nairo Quintana (Movistar) is now 3 minutes down at 4th place. Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) moves into second place overall at 1:52. Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) moves to 3rd place at 2:11. The 20 year old sensation Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) is in 5th place only 5 seconds off of Quintana and about a minute off of Lopez. You know that kid is gunning for the podium. It will be interesting to watch these guys battle. At this point Roglic would have to have a really bad day to lose the Vuelta. But there is a lot more climbing to come and we know Movistar will be attacking.
