La Course By Tour de France
What an exciting finish. Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton-Scott) did what she does. Long range attack! But this time Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Canyon-Sram), Elisa Longo Borghini (Trek-Segafredo), Demi Vollering (Parkhotel Valkenburg), Marianne Vos (CCC-Liv), Elizabeth Deignan (Trek-Segafredo) could hold her wheel. It was a decisive moment and the break contained big names with three world/national champions. The two Trek riders played team tactics with brilliance. Longo Borghini would attack with 2.5 km to go and Vos would quickly shut it down. Then Van Vleuten launched early trying to get the jump on the faster sprinters in Vos and Deignan but would get pulled back. Van Vleuten then goes again with Niewiadoma on the wheel and Vos closed it again. Borghini was dropped but clawed her way back and immediately attacked. Vos closed and countered. It looked good her sprint was powerful and she had a gap on Diegnan. Diegnan closed and came around just at the line with a bike throw.
Tour de France Stage 1
Crash marred opening. Very little to no rain for several months and then it pours. All the oil comes up creating super dangerous conditions on the descents. The main drama of the day was when riders started to marshal the peloton to unofficially neutralize the race until the finish. Kudos to Alexander Kristoff (UAE) who crushed the field sprint taking his 4th stage and his first yellow jersey.
Tour de France Stage 2
Finally positive drama. When they made it over Col d’Èze all together a super long range move was ruled out. But the pace did take its toll as the peloton was whittled down to about 50 riders. This could only mean a serious and decisive attack would come on the final climb Col des Quatre Chemins. And it did, Julian Alaphilippe (Quickstep) attacked it was reminiscent of his attack in Milan San Remo. Only a virtually unknown Marc Hirschi (Sunweb) could hold the wheel. A bit later Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) attacked. It was a bit crazy how easily he bridged up to the duo. Made me wonder why more didn’t try to get across. The trio started to work. With Alaphilippe and Yates doing the lions share. Was Hirschi trying to use his unknown status to surprise the two veterans. The final meters had us on the edge. With the peloton closing fast and the break cat and mousing. FINALLY Alaphilippe launched and to our surprise Hirschi closed and almost took it from him. But the Frenchmen would not be denied and was in tears after the finish. You couldn’t help but to feel the passion that these riders have for winning a stage and putting on yellow. Alaphilippe later would say the win was for his late father, the reason he pointed up to the sky at the finish line. Phew…so beautiful.
