Tour of Flanders Women
After many attacks and small groups off the front the peloton was down to 17 riders at the base of the Oude Kwaremont with 19 kilometers to the finish. Chantal van den Broek-Blaak (Boels Dolmans) attacked once again and this time it stuck. She woould eventually cross the line 1 minute ahead of the rest. Notable: American Lauren Stephens (Tibco) once again made the selection of the elite chase group.
Tour of Flanders Men
What a race! Every berg seemed to change the complexion of the peloton. But at 40km the World Champ Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step) attacked on a cobbled descent drawing out Mathieu van der Poel (Aplecin-Fenix) they would immediately start working. Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) missed the initial move but blasted across the gap just before the Taaienberg to form a Rock Star trio. All three riders worked together until a parked motorbike on the side of the road changed everything. Van Aert steered clear of the moto Van der Poel swerved quickly but Alaphilippe did not see it in time and hit the moto which shot his bike across the road and flipped him on to the tarmac. Crazy. Van Aert and Van der Poel would stay clear to the finish and we finally got the head to head match up we’ve all wanted to see. It ended in a photo finish sprint with Van der Poel edging out Van Aert. Phew…
Giro d’Italia Stage 15
After the previous days ITT the GC contenders shuffled a bit. Most notable was American Brandon McNulty (UAE) who moved up to 4th place with an incredible performance. But stage 15 was all about Team Sunweb. Sunweb used the final climb to sort out Wilco Kelderman’s rivals. And it worked brilliantly. Most notable was Vincenzo Nibali (Trek) and Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) losing 1:30. The leader of the race Joåo Almeida (Quick-Step) had a 50 second buffer on Kelderman and just managed to keep the pink jersey one more day with now a 15 second lead. He was dropped with 7 kilometers of climbing remaining and you could tell he was giving it everything he had. Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos) won the stage securing yet another stage victory for Ineos.
