Cyclocross World Cup Iowa City Elite Women
Kaitie Keough (USA) takes her first ever World Cup win beating Evie Richards (GBR) and living legend Marianne Vos (NED). Wow another American capable of winning a World Cup. It looks like a great year is ahead. American World Champ?
Cyclocross World Cup Iowa City Elite Men
Toon Aerts (BEL), Wout Van Aert (BEL), Michael Vanthourenhout (BEL) complete the Belgium podium sweep. While the U.S. women are enjoying some amazing success it is not the same for the men. With no U.S. riders in the top 20. Aerts comes away from the U.S. World Cups with some serious momentum.
Road World Championships Elite Women
It was the Dutch teams to lose no doubt. With Annemiek Van Vleuten and Anna Van der Breggen named as co-leaders the team also had last years winner Chantal Blaak and a whole host of other strong riders. We have heard the term co-leaders before but it never seems to workout. In this case Van Vleuten crashed early injuring her knee which made Van der Breggen the sole leader. Amanda Spratt (AUS) being a serious threat to the Dutch team came under attack when Van Vleuten and Van der Breggen began attacking and counter attacking. With around 42km Van der Breggen would go clear with Spratt on the wheel but by the top of the climb she was alone and would solo to the line with Spratt doing the same for second. It was her trademark solo victory adding to a long list of wins in 2018 with the World title being biggest one missing until now. Megan Guarnier was the best placed U.S. rider at 16th.
Road World Championships Elite Men
I’ve never seen a Worlds race course destroy the field like this one did. Big names were getting shelled left and right and not just ‘non climbers’. The DNF list was just as long as the finishers. The now famous Höttinger Höll climb was indeed the decisive point in the race. It almost seemed like walking up the 28% ramp would’ve been faster. The French team was strong sacrificing some big names like Thibaut Pinot. We had our money on Julian Alaphilippe who has been hot lately and has had an incredible year but he along with Vincenco Nibali (ITA) were found out. The surprise, but not really after the Vuelta, saw Canadian Micheal Woods attack on the steepest section. With Romain Bardet (FRA), Woods (CAN) and Valverde (SPA) the only ones to go clear out of so many riders. It was amazing to see the course whittle the field to just three. But looming just behind was Tom Dumoulin zigzagging his way back and forth. It was truly something to see. He would eventually catch back on forming a quartet with around 2km remaining. But the writing was on the wall. You don’t take Valverde to the line. He will win just about every time and he did. A controversial winner he is after serving a two year doping ban then coming back and winning his first race after suspension. We would have loved to see Woods, Bardet or Dumoulin win. Kudos to the big Dutch rider. Managing his effort wisely on the climb then using his time trial skills to reel them in. Not long ago Woods was racing right here at Joe Martin. Will the Worlds course be flat next year?
