CX World Championship Women
Pauline Ferrand Prevot (France) is a repeat World Champ! 2012-2013 was the last time that happened. Kudos!
CX World Championship Men
The French stormed into Austria and took all the spoils. Jordan Sarrou makes it a double Worlds win for France. Well done!
Gent Wevelgem Women
Ellen Van Dijk (Trek) used the Kemmelberg to break the peloton. Her teammates Lisa Longo Borghini & Lizzie Deignan (Trek), also Amy Pieters, Jolien D’hoore, Dimi Vollering (Parkhotel Valkenburg), Marta Cavalli (Valcar-Travel & Service), Lauren Stephens (Tibco-SVB), Lotte Kopecky (Lotto), Sarah Roy (Mitchelton-Scott), and Lisa Brennauer (Ceratizit-WNT Pro) formed the the winning break. Trek was doing some serious work to maintain and grow the gap. Nearing the finish Trek started attacking and counter attacking but the group stayed together until the final meters when Kopecky launched a serious bid but D’hoore kept her cool staying on the wheel and then coming around just before the line. Notable: American Lauren Stephens made this elite group of riders.
Gent Wevelgem Men
We finally got the big match up between Mathieu Van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo Visma). A 9 ridder group was just ahead of the Van der Poel, Van Aert group. The Kemmelberg approached and Van Aert threw down a searing acceleration. Van der Poel followed. At the top of the Kemmelberg the deck reshuffled and we had a new group that would stay clear. It was a who’s-who of heavy hitters: Mateo Trentin (CCC), Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ), Kasper Asgreen, Yves Lampaert, Florian Sénéchal (Quick-Step), John Degenkolb, Florian Vermeersch (Lotto), Alberto Bettiol, Sep Vanmarcke (EF), Wout Van Aert, Mike Teunissen (Jumbo), Dylan Teuns (Bahrain), Luke Rowe (Inoes), Mads Pedersen (Trek). Kung would try a solo bid but it was short lived. In the final kilometers attacks came hot and heavy. Van Aert shutting down move after move then went clear on his own Van der Poel pulling him back. After so many attacks you just knew the elastic was about to break for some riders. They were starting to cancel each other out. Pow! Trentin, Bettiol and Sénéchal attacked and others started looking around. Pedersen would go clear bridging up. Pedersen was the fastest finisher out of those guys and the former World Champion would not be denied.
Giro d’Italia Stage 9
With Gerraint Thomas (Ineos) and Simon Yates (Mitchelton Scott) out favorites group shrunk dramatically. Wilco Kelderman (Sunweb) looks keen on wearing pink at 30 seconds and my favorite to win Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) 1:01 from the pink jersey and 31 seconds from Kelderman. Vincenzo Nibali (Trek) sits at 57 seconds and seems to be going very good. The hilly time trial on Sunday should cause some big changes on GC but I think every GC contender will be looking for any opportunities this week. Can Kelderman win the Giro? His team seems strong at the moment.
