Coler MTB Preserve is gonna be something else when all is said and done.
Wow. And I was under the impression that Washington can’t get anything done.
Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Elite Women
Opening weekend of the Spring Classics did not disappoint. But not without an awkward moment when the women’s race was neutralized because it caught the men’s race. The racing started to heat up at the midway point and the peloton started shrinking. Dutch Champ Chantal Blaak forced the final selection on the Muur and then wasted no time going clear of the small group of favorites. She would deliver Boels-Dolmans their first victory of 2019 with a super strong performance.
Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Elite Men
QuickStep was the big winner of opening weekend. The Wolfpack came in with so many cards to play. But it was finally Zdenek Stybar’s (CHE) day. After coming so close over the years Stybar timed his move with precise perfection. After the break was reduced to a who’s-who of roulers, Greg Van Avermaet (BEL), Tim Wellens (BEL), Alexey Lutsenko (KAZ) & Dylan Teuns (BEL). The small group worked very well together until the final k’s when Wellens started skipping pulls. You just knew he was gonna have a go or he was blown, or both. Van Avermaet would shut him down and Stybar countered. It was Lutsenko’s turn but he had a moment of hesitation and that was all Stybar needed. Man, I love the Classics. Kudos to Stybar.
Sunday was another day for the roulers. Luxembourg Champ Bob Jungels looked super strong forcing the final selection with only Magnus Cort (DEN), David Ballerini (ITA), Oliver Naesen (BEL) and Sebastian Langeveld (NED) able/willing to follow. Again, the break worked well together but Jungels looked super strong out of this group. With 16km remaining Jungels would attack his temporary teammates and this spelled doom for them. The peleton was charging hard and could see Jungels as he only had about 15 seconds. It was an “edge of the seat” Classics moment. Jungels survived with time to celebrate rounding out a stellar weekend for QuickStep, its 13th win of 2019. Notable: All three races were won Specialized bicycles. It was also good to see Nikki Terpstra (NED) up there in his new team kit. The stage has been set. Monuments loom.
