Another great edition of MSR. My prediction was blown out of the water. It looked like it was going to play out the way many thought on the Poggio when Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step) attacked with Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) in tow and Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin Fenix) coming across. The attack did not have the punch it did last year. Tailwind? Many other riders were still there. About 12 riders descended the Poggio including fast finishers Caleb Ewan (Lotto) and Peter Sagan (Bora). Tom Piddcock (Ineos) lead the group down the descent and at the bottom Jasper Stuyven (Trek) went all in. It was very Cancellara esque. There was disorganization behind Søren Kragh Andersen (Team DSM) was able to come across. That seemed just enough to help Stuyven stay away as the sprint started Suyven burned his final match holding off the chargers. Ewen second, Van Aert 3rd. Phew…that’s gotta be the best 10km in bike racing. Post race Stuyven said no one is unbeatable and “all or nothing” after the descent of the Poggio.
Trofeo Alfredo Binda
What a sight to see the Italian National Champ jersey on Lisa Longo Borghini (Trek) sail away solo on the final lap of an Italian Classic. No one would come close as Longo Borghini put 1 minute into her rivals. She mentioned after the victory that she was inspired by the previous days Milan-San Remo winner Jasper Stuyuen (Trek) who said “all or nothing.”
