Paris-Nice Stage 1
Rain, wind and crashes. Warren Barguil (FDJ) and Romain Bardet (AG2R) would see there overall chances dashed after a crash inside 65km. Barguil would finish the race inside the time cut but then got disqualified for drafting the team car. The peloton splintered forming a reduced group only containing a handful of GC contenders. Julian Alaphilippe (QuickStep) knowing how close this race has been won in the past wisely scooped up the bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint, 35km remaining. With Tiesj Benoot (Sunweb) for company. Alaphilippe spoke a few words and both settled in, working together. At one point the duo would have about 40 seconds and Alaphilippe picked up another 3 second time bonus. I was starting to believe. At around 3 km Dylan Teuns (Bahrain) & Maximilian Schachmann (Bora) went clear of the chasers and had to do a huge effort to bridge up to Alaphilippe and Benoot. Schachmann who could frequently be seen shaking his head during the race would out kick Tuens to take the win and the yellow jersey. Alaphilippe solidified his overall bid on day 1.
Paris-Nice Stage 2
Shredded. That is the word that comes to mind. A fabulously interesting race. At around 30km to go crosswinds and battle for position caused major splits. Julian Alaphilippe (QuickStep) would have an untimely flat and Nairo Quintana (Arkea) would go down in a crash. With these GC favorites caught out the pace was injected and the crosswinds did the damage. Vincenzo Nibali (Trek) had none other than World Champ Mads Peterson (Trek) and Jasper Stuyven (Trek) for company. Nibali “The Shark of Messina” sensed blood in the water and put his roleurs to work along with Peter Sagan (Bora) who also sensed that his teammate Maximilian Schachmann (Bora) would solidify/extend his lead. The teams worked well together. Sergio Higuita (EF) also made the splits to find himself in this front group. So far the little Colombian is riding a brilliant race of positioning. Giacomo Nizzolo (NTT) won the sprint from the small group, securing 6th victory for his team this season. The big winners were GC contenders Nibali, Higuita & Schachmann. The big losers, Quintana & Alaphilippe losing 1:25.
