In case you were wondering if the World Champ values core strength.
Criterium du Dauphine Stage 7
The perfect stage race course for Geraint Thomas (GBR) and the Skybots. After a hiccup (crash) on the Prologue the Skybots would rip the yellow jersey away for good on Stage 3’s team time trial. What was impressive about Thomas’ ride is that it was not just about dominating the time trials (which they did) then minimizing damage on climbing stages. Thomas didn’t just hang with the climbing specialists, he socked it to them a couple times. He looks lean and ready to make a run at the big show in July. The controversy of the race came when Thomas flatted with 40km’s remaining and Romain Bardet’s (FRA) AG2R didn’t ease up on the pace. Here is what Bardet says, “That’s racing. We didn’t accelerate, we maintained the same pace. I explained to Geraint that of course, we’re riding hard to win the stage.” We like Bardet and his aggressive style of racing. He looks poised as well to do a good Tour. It will be interesting to see if “puncture gate” comes back to haunt him. Notable: Dan Martin (IRL) wins a stage and finishes about 2’35” behind Thomas on GC, essentially the time he lost in the TTT.
Tour de Suisse Stage 2
The World Champ has been super quiet after his Paris-Roubaix victory. On stage 2 he would take it to the sprint specialists which included the virtually unstoppable Fernando Gaviria (COL). It seems as if Sagan is the only one who can put the brakes on the blue trains run this year.
Tour de Suisse Stage 3
Slippery when wet. This stage would see the World Champ liven things up with an attack on the final climb only to be reeled in. He still contests the sprint. Sonny Colbrelli (Ita) edges out Fernando Gaviria (COL) and Peter Sagan (SVK) rounds out the podium in what was a slightly sketchy final meters.
