Tour Down Under Stage 6
Early peak Richie Porte (Trek-Segafredo) wins Tour Down Under. You just knew it was his to loose. He looked good on stage 3 when he took the lead. A bit surprising was British neo-pro Matt Holmes (Lotto Soudal) who was able to hold Porte’s wheel and take the win. Porte has long been the king of Willunga Hill and seemed surprised when Holmes came around. Never the less, Porte gets a win early in 2020. Good for sponsors and moral.
Cyclo-cross World Cup Hoogerheide Elite Women
Exciting race until the very end! It came down to the last lap, the last feature, the last meters. Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado (Alpecin-Fenix) has been on a hot streak winning at will it seems. The clear favorite. Lucinda Brand (Telenet Fidea Lions) won this race last year and has been an ever present force in 2020. Brand would take control of the final lap. Attacking and surging several times. Only Alvarado and Annemarie Worst (777) were strong enough to hold the wheel. Sanne Cant (Iko-Crelan) & Yara Kastelijn (777) were there but would get distanced with every surge. They would claw their way back up but you just knew it wasn’t in the cards for either of them. You just got the feeling that Alvarado would give it a go and she did. On the stairs she ran up along side Brand but Brand held her off. Then Alvarado surged ahead just before the entry onto the off-camber section. It was a crucial moment. As soon has she dropped down her front wheel caught and Alvarado plummeted down the dirt wall. Not none for making very many mistakes…ever, I gotta believe the pressure Brand was applying caused just that little bit of tiredness which can impact mistakes on techy bits. Either way Brand was the aggressor on the final lap and it was great to see her win. Stoked about Worlds.
Cyclo-cross World Cup Hoogerheide Elite Men
I liken this to watching a field goal kicked in the NFL (with no attempt at blocking it), business as usually for Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix). It is great to see Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) up there, finishing 8th. He did finish 2nd to MvdP the day before at another race. But there is no clearer favorite for Worlds.
Vuelta a San Juan Stage 2
The build up for the sprint on this stage was a bit nerve racking. Not sure if it was first race jitters but the elbowing and battle for position was intense. Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) opened his 2020 account with a commanding sprint. If you can find the whole race video watch the final kilometers. The helicopter view will show all the jockeying for position going on. Phew.
