Tour of Flanders Women
It was a show of great team tactics as the Belgian Champ Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx) out kicked Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar) in the final meters. Van Vleuten (Movistar) would again use the Paterburg thinning out the group of favorites in a bid to go solo. However she could not drop Kopecky or teammate Chantal van den Broek-Blaak (SD Worx). With superior numbers it was Van den Broek-Blaak’s attack that left Van Vleuten to chase with Kopecky on the wheel. When they drew close to the line Van Vleuten launched but was quickly out paced by Kopecky. The Belgian Champ crossed the line first at the biggest Belgian race. The crowd sounded even louder than the men’s race finish.
Tour of Flanders Men
Tadej Pogačar’s (UAE) attack on the Oude Kwaremont about 50KM to go was ridiculous. Weaving around riders from the break as if they were standing still. It caught out some big favorites like Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) and Tom Pidcock (Ineos). However they were able to return to the group. On the Paterburg Dylan van Baarle (Ineos) and Fred Wright (Bahrain-Victorious) attacked and got about a 20 second gap. Pogačar, Van der Poel and Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ) would use the Koppenberg to bridge up. The group of 5 worked together to create separation of about 50 seconds before hitting the Kwaremont for the final time. Pogacar upped the pace dropping everyone but Van der Poel. They would work together only having one climb remaining. With the Paterberg looming this would Pogacar’s chance to leave the Dutchmen behind. And sure enough there was a brief moment were Van der Poel juuuuuust came off the wheel. But within about 4-5 powerful pedal strokes he made it back on. At the top Pogacar turned around only to see a massive gorilla on his back. The two would work together until the finish and in the closing meters cat and mouse each other. Meanwhile Madouas and Van Baarle closed in. Van der Poel played this to perfection and Pogacar got schooled. Van der Poel launched and Madouas and Van Baarle had already started their sprints swarming Pogacar who would get boxed in behind Van der Poel. Throwing up his arms in frustration as he saw his chances of the podium fall away. That was crazy!
