Amstel Gold Elite Women
Knocking on the door at Strade and Flanders, Katarzyna Niewiadoma (POL) finally put it all together to win the race she always dreamed of winning. She looked strong all day animating the race and going in the moves. But it was the last time up the Cuaberg that she staked her claim, only Annemiek Van Vleuten (NED) who ran out of road contested her. It was an explosive exciting race to watch. Notable: Tayler Wiles (USA) was the top American finishing 12th.
Amstel Gold Elite Men
Best race of the season thus far. Mathieu van der Poel was the easy pick to win. The Dutch Champ at one of the biggest Dutch races. MvdP said this was his main goal for his road racing campaign this year. At 40km’s on the Guiperberg he lit the race up. In the past he has teed up the winning break from long range but this time it was not meant to be. Gorka Izaguirre (SPA) was on the wheel and would not work and no other favorites wanted to go. Soon they would be brought back. On the next climb Julian Alaphilippe (FRA) went clear with Jakob Fuglsang (DEN), Matteo Trentin (ITA), Dries Devenyns (BEL). The group of four would catch the early break but the peloton was closing in, Alaphilippe used the Eyserbosweg as his launchpad with another salty attack and Fuglsang would join. It looked all to familiar and this had winning move written all over it. At this point there were several small groups closing in on the final. The leaders were given the wrong time checks and began to play games. Michal Kwiatkowski (POL) then appeared and immediately lifted the pace. Now in the near distance you could just make out another group being lead by none other then the resilient MvdP. In the closing meters with an all or nothing mentality he would sprint from 400 out hoping to jump the trio. And he did. It was an amazing final one I’ll remember for a long time. Now MvdP changes over to the mountain bike to take on the big names in the dirt. Wow.
