Amstel Gold Women
The GOAT, Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma) was cool calm and collected in a race that had so many attacks. Annemiek van Vleuten’s (Movistar Team) searing attack on the Cauberg 36km created a major split. On the Geulhemmerberg and Bemelerberg more attacks with Grace Brown (BikeExchange) getting a gap. But she was reeled in the final time up the Cauberg. Van Vlueten launched and Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM) closed the gap with Vos in the wheel. She would go over the top of Van Vlueten dropping Vos. Elisa Longo Borghini (Trek) bridged up but did not work with Niewiadoma. The cat and mouse game allowed Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (Team SD Worx) to pull the group back up. Longo Borghini was the first to open up the sprint then Vos came around in the final meters. Almost celebrating too early. You felt like anyone could have won from the small group. Vos was patient allowing others to do the work of bringing it back together and had a perfeclty timed sprint. What a race.
Amstel Gold Men
Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) completed the Jumbo-Visma double. The team is also based in the Netherlands so I imagine there are some happy bosses. The decisive moment came the final time up the Cauberg with Julian Alaphilippe (QuickStep) lighting things up. The selection was forming with Van Aert, Tom Pidcock (Ineos), Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos), Michael Matthews (BikeExchange), Richard Carapaz (Ineos) and Max Schachmann (Bora). Ineos had the upper hand and quickly made use of its numbers. Kwiatkowski launched going clear Schachmann brought him back then Pidcock countered and only Van Aert and Schachmann could follow. It was a devastating attack. The trio worked well together but as they closed on the finish the cat and mouse games started. The reduced peloton was breathing down their necks. Van Aert on the front launched at 200 meters with Pidcock on the wheel. Pidcock swung round he had momentum Van Aert threw his bike Pidcock did as well. It was too close to call! TV images depending on which angle made it look like either rider had the advantage. The photo finish shows Van Aert winning by millimeters. Another huge win for Van Aert. Phew…time for nap. Looking forward to watching this generation of racers for many more years.
