Bonelli PRO XCT
World Champ Kate Courtney (USA) takes her first win in the rainbow kit. On the men’s side Jose Gerardo Ulloa (MEX) wins it.
Volta a Catalunya Stage 7
It was an explosive final stage, contested until the very end. Adam Yates (GBR) was only 14 seconds down on Miguel Angel Lopez (COL) going into the final stage and launched a daring attack with the help of his brother Simon Yates (GBR). With the time bonus up for grabs Yates was the virtual leader of the race. Lopez kept his cool using up the last of his teammates to chase before taking it up himself. Then the attacks came from Team Sky and Movistar but the cagey Lopez shut them down. A regroup of 11 riders crossed the line and Lopez defended his GC placement. Notable: While all that was going on Davide Formolo (ITA) was OTF all day and won the stage solo. Very impressive ride considering what was happening behind.
Gent-Wevelgem Elite Women
A super fast race with attack after attack yet the bunch would come in together for a mass sprint. We were somewhat surprised that the course did not make more selections. Kirsten Wild (NED) took the sprint.
Gent-Wevelgem Elite Men
A day of wind, splits & long range attacks made this race so interesting. In the first hour of racing the peloton was already shredded. A group of 18 contained many big names separating themselves from the rest. The group would get whittled down to 12 then eventually just 4. Peter Sagan (SLV), Mike Teunissen (Ned), Matteo Trentin (ITA), Edward Teuns (BEL) worked well together. It is the first time we have seen QuickStep on the back foot and not dictating the race. Luke Rowe (GBR) attacked the reduced peloton and bridged across making it 5 riders. You started to believe the move just might go clear to the finish. Alexander Kristoff (NOR) thought this and attacked attempting to bridge. But QuickStep at this point riding for Elia Viviani (ITA) were desperately trying to shut it down. Then the group was swept up and only Rowe pressed on. More attacks came in the final meters Jasper Stuyven (BEL), Jack Bauer (NZL), Amund Grøndahl Jansen (NOR) went clear. This move looked promising. Again QuickStep super domestiques hit the front and only made the catch inside the final kilometer. The sprint was on! Kudos to the big Norwegian Alexander Kristoff who had the legs to charge in for the win. We thought he was fading away but it looks like he has returned to form.
