The Avoca Road Race Training Series has officially kicked off. It’s great to get the old band back together. While most of us are still searching for racing fitness others have clearly done the work to be in great shape. Series like this one are great for the local racing community. It helps folks build & sharpen race fitness and knock the rust off team tactics. It is also great for anyone new to bicycle racing. I met someone yesterday that competed in their second race. If you are interested in bicycle racing and looking for a less intimidating way to get your cycling socks wet this is for you. Good stuff. A big thanks to Jason and his family at Evans Events for putting on the series.
The Avoca race course is really a fun mixture. Pretty much a triangle. A long flat section, then a long downhill and a long gradual uphill with a kicker at the end. The hill is not hard but hard enough to break things up. Last nights racing was proper. The teams with numbers Three Happy Cows, Athlete Forward, Springfield Brewing Co. & Walmart all had a guy in the break on the second lap. So it was left up to other teams to work. That’s all she wrote. Kind of a group ride for awhile but with two laps to go things heated up again. On the last lap Walmart and Athlete Forward had a guy off with a gap approaching the climb. About that time my teammate Mark G launched and took I believe it was Tanner W of 901 Racing(?) with him. They shot past the other two guys and stayed away to the finish. So the field was sprinting for 7th which I wasn’t much interested in. But following the attacks was good for the legs. Kudos to Curtis L of Athlete Forward for the win. Next race is March 25th. Hope to see you there.
How do you know this is a weekday race?
A good group rolled out last night.
