I keep training through the winter months so that when the pace speeds up in the Spring I won’t be off the back.
I ride through the winter to balance weight gain due to Christmas cookies and stuffing!
The thought of winning a big race in the summer makes me want to go out in 20 degree weather.
my motivation comes from knowing my teammates are working hard through the winter and I want to be able to positively contribute to the effort next year.
The promise of a warm spring breeze.
Apparently, not enough motivation. You would think that my steadily rising weight, the thought of being way behind the curve in spring would do something, but so far this winter, my training has been extremely lacking.
Training for my first racing season! Feel the burn! (of cold wind in my eyeballs….or lactic acid in my legs-take your pick)
I ride in the winter because I love riding my bike. It also helps me keep off the lbs over the Holidays.
My off season pretty much is just time to try and get stronger legs for the Joe Martin Stage Race.
I’ve got to fight off the extra calories from all of the holiday meals – plus, the thought of gaining some kind of advantage over the competition is nice.
I don’t train in the winter until January. When I step on the scale and begin weeping, I know it’s time to start getting in shape for Spring. It never happens, but it still motivates me. Or shames me. Take your pick.
Wanting to be the best.
After almost 25 years of racing, the sport of cycling never gets old. Regardless of the conditions, if the roads are dry I’m out there turning the cranks. The motivation to continue riding through the winter is the knowledge that it’s very hard to catch the racing train once the season is in full swing! Oh and to crush Upchurch on all the climbs!
Charity rides are a way to donate to favorite causes, like Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, even when your means are modest!
I slack off during winter. There is too much in the way of holiday food and drink to bother being in shape!
Winter training… because one needs time away from toddlers throughout the week.
I ride in the winter to drop people in the spring.
How about 60 degree temps and sunshine in December!
What motivates me is knowing that Team Tyson/HappyCows/Dickson street…is gonna have like 20 dudes throwing attack after attack in all of the local races.
The goals I have for next year keeps me motivated.
I just got back on the bike in September after years of hiatus. Lost 10 pounds right away and feel happy! It’s great therapy (sunshine, birds, other people). And I want to try to keep off what I lost during the holiday season. So will be riding whenever possible.
The fact that I love to eat and eat a lot is my motivation to continue to ride and also the fact that it is a lot of fun.
Fear of the reaper.
So I won’t go crazy and die.
Who needs motivation with weather like this? But when it’s cold, I find motivation in how different the rides are, the scenery, the seasons. The differences help me appreciate the easy times so much more
Being strong in the spring and summer keeps me motivated for the winter…
My team mates keep me motivated.

Winter is actually one of my top 4 favorite seasons to ride.
The looks on people’s faces when they see you riding when it is below freezing and the sun has not yet fully risen. Those looks I get are the reason I keep riding.
I ride to spend time out in God’s creation away from the busyness of society.
So maybe come spring I won’t get dropped on every hill over 2% grade!
To fight the fat!!
I train through the winter because riding in stupid-cold weather is like a long terrible climb, another way to suffer. But I also continue to ride so I can eat what I want. Mmmmmm, pizza………..
I ride and train so I can continue to set new PR’s!
Stay in touch with all the terrific friends I’ve made through riding.
Helps keep away muffin tops.
Also to listen to Ben bitch & complain!!
I like to ride as much as possible and having the right gear keeps me going when the temps drop. We are lucky to have TBR Tuesday night and OCA Saturday rides for good company and tempo during the winter.
If I don’t ride in the winter, my “Svelte Physique” might be compromised.
I stay motivated by choosing other racers I compete with on the road as a targets for next years races.
Winter riding makes espresso and stouts taste better (or back when we had winters).
that improvement is still possible…
First, to keep from getting fatter during the “off season.” Second, so I can start the spring from a better place.
The potential for cat 4 glory in the spring.
Any excuse to wear tight pants… And there are no allergens in the winter!
I ride to keep my attitude up during the short (daylight) days.
I ride for the cookies.
Buddy the elf singing jaunty Christmas tunes while I pedal away on the trainer!
I ride through the winter because it keeps me in shape, motivated and it prepares me for the spring/fall group rides.
Because I need time outside.
I ride so I don’t go insain
Trying to keep my weight no more than 15 lbs over. Be ready for the fast spring rides. Feel like I am doing something healthy. Keep my mind busy. Test new training and diets.
I’m motivated to keep riding in the winter by my beautiful bike from The Bike Route. It calls my name!
I keep training so I will be ready for the upcoming group rides.
Being able to go into that first race in early spring while feeling confident about my conditioning and not behind is what motivates me to keep riding through the winter. Also, when I haven’t trained properly during the winter, I find that I feel as if I am playing catch up literally the whole year!
I figure there are three reasons for me. One, riding in the winter hopefully makes the spring easier. Two, it lets me eat more of what I like. And three, riding in stupid-cold weather is another form of suffering.
Never made it through a winter. This year, a desire to not gain 20 lbs again and to maintain my speed has been keeping me at it. Warm weather has been a big help.
I train so that I don’t vomit in the spring when riding with my buddies, who are much stronger and more talented.
