Heusden-Zolder World Cup
Vos is back at the top step in her second CX race this season. But the real story is U.S. based CZE rider Katerina Nash. The 37 year old is not making it easy for the world champ. This highlight video doesn’t do the race justice. If you have a chance watch the last two laps. Where is World Championships this year? You guest it…Czech Republic.
Marginal Gains?
Interesting study & article. Makes me wonder if only I had asthma… Click on the image above to read the article.

Have you ridden it yet? You should. Another sweet video from PZ.
Skin-to-Lycra
The pediatrician has been stressing the importance of skin-to-lycra for male newborns. Apparently it helps them be more comfortable in stretchy pants later in life.

Wow, these are scary good. Get them while you can at Target.

This ride is legit. Not in the UCI kind of way. Anyone know the story behind it?

OCA
EIB (exercise induced bronchospasm) is an area I have done a lot of research in. Another point that is not mentioned in the article that has been shown to be a factor is exercising in the cold. Many researchers find changes in the lungs that are consistent with EIB ( a form of asthma) due to training in too cold of weather, specifically about 40 degrees or below with higher intensity efforts that increase respiratory rate which does not allow you to warm and humidify the air prior to reaching the lungs. Hence why you see me wearing the goofy baklava at certain temperatures! I suspect the higher rate of EIB or asthma with athletes has a lot to do with the fact that many train year round and in very cold conditions which causes changes that are consistent with asthma. Just my 2 copper.
Thanks for this information Hayes. I am sure there are some legit EIA athletes out there but I also recall Lemond getting his checkup when switching to a new team and the doctor telling him he had asthma which he did not and he refused treatment. Seems like something that is tossed around quite liberally in sports.
Asthma, or EIB/EIA whatever acronym you want to apply is not terribly difficult to diagnose. A PFT pre exercise, post and with the use of medications will show if there is a decrease in pulmonary function. Also you can look at symptoms as well such as excess mucous/coughing post exercise. Yes, it is a common thing to see people using albuterol etc but if you aren’t asthmatic it really is not giving you some big advantage, if anything it could be a disadvantage as the medication increases HR (beta agonist) which would decrease stroke volume and peripheral perfusion.
The American flag bike used to live at Phat Tire for months with a Not For Sale sign on it. I believe they store it for one of their customers who is said to be “a very cool guy” .
Thanks Wes. I figure he must be interesting with such a interesting ride.
