Our local economies are booming once again as school starts this week. Particularly in Fayetteville where overnight our population increases by the thousands (27,000 in 2017). I have enjoyed the break that summer brings on our roads but I also appreciate the energy that school brings and the dollars to our businesses. It also means that fall and football are near! But folks, for the cyclist it is a time to be extra vigilant. Why? Here comes the road rage.
Think about it. Motorists will be much more impatient with the new stressed roadways. The change is pretty abrupt. This morning I watched about ten cars ignore the pedestrian street crossings. People need time to readjust the timing of their commutes. Road rage will be more frequent and accidents will as well. Particularly in Fayetteville, you must consider all the incoming students who have not driven in our region before. They don’t know who has the right of way and where they are going for that matter.
The Razorback Greenway will also see a spike in usage as college students will be walking, running and riding. Also local students riding to school. Again, please be patient on the Greenway. Slow down on blind turns and always keep in mind you aren’t the only one using it. If you think your bike commute to work is going to be the same over the next three weeks then you should think again. Be more vigilant. Keep your head on a swivel and be prepared to stop more. Slow down more. Be patient more.
We here at OCA wish everyone a safe commute/recreating over the next couple weeks. Stay vigilant, now…get out there and Ride The Ozarks!
